We used the CogAT practice tests and I would definitely recommend it to other parents. I liked that my child had both the timed and step-by-step options when taking a practice test.

My son was preparing for CogAT Level 9. With practice, my son got used to the question styles and the practice built his confidence with the exam. Once kids know they can do well, there is no limit – they will always do their best. I have recommended TestPrep-Online to all my friends.

What Is the CCAT-7?

The CCAT efficiently assesses academic strength and weaknesses in children and is therefore used in Canada (in place of the CogAT, which is almost identical) for admission into Canadian gifted and talented programs. In grade 1, the CCAT test assesses verbal, nonverbal, and quantitative abilities. The test focuses less on verbal abilities than nonverbal and quantitative abilities, making this test useful for students who do not speak English natively.

CCAT Test Format & Content

In total, there are 136 questions on the grade 1 CCAT. As on each level of the CCAT, there are three batteries: Verbal, Nonverbal, and Quantitative. These batteries may be administered together or separately, depending on the needs and restrictions of the administering teacher and/or the school.

Here are the different types of questions our grade 1 pack includes:

The verbal battery (click here for more information and sample questions):

  1. Picture analogies: In this type of questions, you are given a pair of pictures with a certain relationship between them. Then you are given another pair with one picture and a missing picture. You need to understand the relationship between the first pair of pictures in order to implement this relationship upon the second pair to figure out what the missing picture should be.
  2. Sentence completion: In this section, you need to listen to instructions and follow them in order to choose the correct picture out of three. An example could be: choose the picture with two birds looking to the left.
  3. Picture classification: In this section, you are given three pictures that belong to the same group. Then you need to choose out of three options the picture that belongs to the exact same group. The most important part in this section is to figure out the group of the original three pictures. For example, if you have pictures of a beetle, a fly, and a bee, you can understand they belong to the insects group. Then the correct answer must also be an insect, like an ant or a cockroach.

The quantitative battery (click here for more information and sample questions):

  1. Number analogies: You are given a pair of pictures with a certain relationship between them. Then you are given another pair with one picture and a missing picture. You need to understand the relationship between the first pair of pictures in order to implement this relationship upon the second pair and to figure out what the missing picture should be. The relationship between the pictures is some kind of calculation. For example, in the first picture you may see two coins and in the second picture three coins. Thus, you can infer that the relationship is +1.
  2. Number series: You are given a set of strings with beads. You need to figure out the pattern in which the beads are organized and to determine the next string in the series. For example, if at first you have one bead, then two beads, and then three beads, you can understand that the next string will have four beads.
  3. Number puzzles: You are given pictures of two trains which carry a certain number of items. One of the trains has a compartment with a question mark. You need to figure out how many items should be instead of the question mark so both trains will carry the same number of items. For example, if one train carries 2 apples and on the other train there is 1 apple and a compartment with a question mark, you know the correct answer should be 1 apple so both trains will carry two apples each.

The nonverbal battery (click here for more information and sample questions):

  1. Figure matrices: You are given a pair of shapes with a certain relationship between them. Then you are given another pair with one shape and a missing shape. You need to understand the relationship between the first pair in order to figure out what the missing shape should be.
  2. Figure classification: in each question there are three shapes that belong to the same category. You need to figure out the category and then choose the answer that belongs to the same category. For example, the original three shapes can all be types of triangles.
  3. Paper folding: In this section, you are being shown with a piece of paper that is folded and holes are punched in it in a certain way. Then, you need to figure out how this piece of paper will look like after unfolding it.

Night Before the CCAT Exam Tips

  • Make sure you take a good nap.
  • To relieve stress, take some deep breaths.
  • Do something fun: play some games with friends, watch a movie, or read an interesting book.
  • Believe in yourself and in your ability to do well on the test! Positive thinking is a key to success.
  • On the day of the test, make sure to eat a nourishing and healthy breakfast.
  • Make sure you wake up early enough to arrive at the test's place on time without the need to rush.

How to Prepare for the CCAT

It is important that your child come to the CCAT test prepared, as it is a difficult test. With the help of TestPrep-Online's comprehensive CCAT practice pack, your child will feel ready for the CCAT.

Our CCAT practice tests simulate the real test with the same time limitation. The explanations for the questions cannot be viewed while solving the test but only at the end. After completing the practice test and submitting it, you will be provided with a score report in which you will be able to view your score, see which questions you answered correctly, and view detailed explanations and solving tips for each question.

Our recommendation is to try solving the practice test and then read carefully and thoroughly the explanations. It is recommended to read the explanations of all the questions, even questions which you solved correctly, as you might learn new ways of dealing with such questions. After reading the explanations, it is recommended to try solving the practice test once more. This way, you will be able to track your progress and understand which topics require more practice.
